17C DOMINGO LAZO Encaustic ST BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX
Original 17th Century encaustic on canvas. It is interesting to note that the technique used is a variation of the encaustic technique, since the canvas was prepared with a light coat of wax and then the mix of oils and pigments were applied. This type of work is what dates this piece to the 1600's. The image represented on the piece is that of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (Bernardo de Claraval) holding a demon on a chain as his most usual attribute. The work is signed by Domingo Lazo. It has been at some point restored, as it was relined and set on a new strecher. It also has a tear near the bottom of the Saints dress that has been patched and is evidenced from the back. The painting is otherwise in perfect condition.
