Alejandro Colunga Marin (1948 - )

This self taught artist was born in Guadalajara on December 11th of 1948. In 1968, he started studying architecture. Then, from 1971 and for two years he had formal music training at the Conservatorio del Estado de Jalisco, but his true passion would be painting and sculpture. He studied ceramics with Jorge Wilmot and several artisans of Tonala. Colunga cites Tamayo as one of his major influences, but unlike Tamayo, he digs deeper into the subconscious to base his images on a world of childhood fantasy. He traces his subjects to ghost stories told to him and his numerous siblings by their "nana". He has exhibited numerous times in Mexico and abroad, and his work has earned him many awards and recognitions.
