Francisco Zuņiga (1912-1998)
Born in San Jose Costa Rica, on December 27, 1912. Early in life, Zuņiga started working for his father at his Taller de Imagineria, where they would create sculptures together. He later studied drawing at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in San José. In 1936 he moved to Mexico City and continued to study drawing and painting with Manuel Rodriguez Lozano. He worked and studied with Oliverio Martinez and Guillermo Ruiz and becomes a master of sculpture going so far as becoming a professor of his unique sculpting technique at the important Escuela de Pintura y Escultura "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City.
From 1945 he exclusively worked in sculpture with stone being his favorite medium. He made numerous monumental works while also manufacturing some small pieces. Zuņiga is one of the greatest masters of contemporary art in Latin-America. His work has been recognized many times in Mexico and abroad, and taken a permanent residence is Museums and important collections throughout the world. Francisco Zúņiga died August 9, 1998 in México City.
