Domitila Dominguez was born a Mazatecan Indian in San Pedro Ixcatlan, in northern Oaxaca, Mexico in 1948. Damn construction that was going on near her native village forced her family to move and live as nomads as work opportunities presented themselves. Domi learned to paint, weave and sculpt by herself. Some of her most notable exhibitions have been at the Francisco de la Cueva Gallery in the Universidad Autonoma de Puebla, the Frida Kahlo Gallery at the Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa (1979), the Alianza Francesa in Mexico City (1982) and the Casa de Teatro Hormiguero in Guadalajara (1984). She has also exhibited in the US and Europe and has illustrated important books by prominent authors like Rigoberta Menchu. Her sculpture has been exhibited in galleries such as the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Alfredo Zalce in Morelia (1998), Grady Alexis Gallery in NYC (2001) and the Esperanza Center in San Antonio (2003).
This prolific artist has been widely recognized for her work. Some of the awards she has received include the Prize at the A la Orilla del Viento pageant by the Fondo de Cultura Economica for her work illustrating "La Señora Regañona" (1996) and Honorable Mention at the First Biennale of Painting and Engraving Alfredo Zalce (1997). She currently lives and works in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
